Accessibility in Mello: keyboard, motion, and contrast

Keyboard play

You can complete full runs without a pointer. Focus a tray piece, move the placement ghost with the arrow keys, and confirm with Enter or Space. Escape typically dismisses dialogs when they are open. Tab order follows the main interactive controls: modes, board-related actions, tray pieces, and settings.

If a placement is illegal, the board does not change and feedback is non-punitive — try another cell. The board instructions element describes the keyboard placement flow for assistive tech.

Reduced motion

Settings includes a reduced-motion option. When enabled (or when the device prefers reduced motion and you follow system appearance where applicable), decorative motion is toned down so clears and transitions stay readable instead of flashy.

Gameplay timing is not a twitch test: there is no countdown clock forcing rushed placements. You set the pace of every move.

Light, dark, and color themes

Appearance can follow the device, or lock to light or dark. Separate color themes change the look of pieces and chrome without changing piece shapes, scores, or fairness. Themes are free and never sold as power.

If contrast feels low on a bright display, try dark appearance or another theme. The goal is comfort during longer Endless sessions, not a fixed brand-only palette.

Sound and haptics

Where the browser or device allows, sound and haptic feedback can be toggled in Settings. Turn them off for silent play or on for placement confirmation. Neither setting changes which pieces you receive.

Screen readers and board structure

The board is exposed as a grid with per-cell labels describing row, column, and filled or empty state. Tray pieces carry spoken shape descriptions so you can choose shapes by name, not only by color. Dialogs use clear headings for fairness, stats, settings, and results.

If a control seems unlabeled after an update, reload once online so the latest app shell loads, then re-open Settings.

Offline and install accessibility notes

Installed web apps and mobile shells keep the same rules and most of the same settings. After install, open once online so assets cache. Offline play still honors reduced motion and appearance choices stored on the device.
